Rethinking Love, Sex & Desire
To mark the release of our fifth magazine on Love, Sex & Desire, Consented brings you Rethinking Love, Sex & Desire, a day of discussions around? love, sex and desire!
Yet the panelists will not necessarily focus on the intricacies of these things, rather on how the world we live directly influences how we experience them.
Too often people think that our love lives are separate from broader power structures that dominate our existences. Yet how do systems of capitalism and colonialism influence the way we experience love, sex and desire? Why are some people better positioned to both receive and give love than others? To what extent is who and how we love out of our control? How, even, does the state influence who gets to be loved and on what terms?
These questions are incredibly pertinent given that we live in a time of gross individualism which renders many of us lonely and depressed. How can we move beyond this state of affairs, decenter the self and articulate a broader sense of community and communal love?
This event will aim to explore these themes and many more split into two panels as follows examining whether love is out of our control, as well as how we can move beyond narratives relating to the self. Speakers include:
Peter Yeung (Journalist), Sai Englert (SOAS), Marai Larasi (Imkaan), Ama Josephine Budge (Batty Mama), Dorett Jones (Imkaan). More to be confirmed.
This event is being held at Birkbeck?s Malet Street campus on Saturday 20th January in room B34. Doors open at 12.45 pm for a 1.00 pm start. Each ticket comes with a copy of our new magazine on Love, Sex & Desire (RRP £7.50).
